Texas Building Energy Performance Standards - 2002 Edition
Residential Code: 2000 IECC with 2001 Supplement, mandatory for all single family homes. Jurisdictions may adopt a more recent code. IC3, an original software program developed by Texas A&M University, may be used to show compliance. Effective since August 13, 2002. See below for January 2012 update
Commercial Code: 2000 IECC with 2001 Supplement, mandatory for all other nonresidential (multifamily homes, commercial, and industrial) buildings. Jurisdictions may adopt more stringent codes. For local jurisdictions, COMcheck can be used to show compliance. NO LONGER IN EFFECT: See below for April 2011 update
State buildings: ASHRAE 90.1-2007 is mandatory for state-funded buildings. The ASHRAE Compliance Form from the ASHRAE User Manual may be used to show compliance.
FUTURE UPDATE:
As published in the June 4, 2010 Texas Register, the Texas State Energy Conservation Office (SECO) has officially adopted a rule (proposed March 26) to update the state’s energy codes codified in 34 TAC §19.53. The rule will update the Texas Building Energy Performance Standards (34 TAC §19.53) to:
- For single family homes – the energy efficiency provisions (Chapter 11) of the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC), effective January 1, 2012.
- For all other residential, commercial, and industrial buildings – the 2009 IECC, effective April 1, 2011 (this effective date was erroneously reported previously as January 1, 2011).
