Citizens Advocating for Green Building Codes in Madison County, Kentucky

I live in rural Kentucky and for the past year and 1/2 have been working with Madison County Zoning and Planning Board to approve a variety of residential sustainable building designs. There have been several others in the county who have been doing the same.  Rather than continuing to work  piecemeal, the county planning administer suggested that we get together and propose a green building  code that would give the board  standards to operate from rather than having to grant waivers and the like. We have held a couple of public meetings since then and are beginning to work with Eastern Kentucky University to create a proposal.  Other than buiding green homes and working extensively with the zoning office and health department to get various green building techniques and technologies appoved (earth bag, straw bale, grey water garden, composting toilets, etc.)., we have very little expertise in code development.  At this time, we plan to use the NAHB Green Building Code as our basis. This site has some great information that I have begun to sort through and, after searching for two years, am thrilled to finally find some solid guidance on how to proceed. I would like to connect with others who may also be working with their local governments to develop green residential building codes. Anyone out there?

Suggestions for Green Codes in KY

Howdy Margie! Mike DeWein, BCAP Technical Director here. I highly recommend that you consider the ICC 700, which is esentially the same as the green residential code developed by ICC (ICC 700) and NAHB, as you already seem to be, for Residential buildings. Take a look here for articles we wrote on our work with Austin, San Antonio, and Houston on green codes. and, I recommend you stick with those written codes, so as not to reinvent some pretty good wheels. The various folks listed with those projects will be helpful. Also, I offer BCAP's assistance. You can reach me at 518-664-1308 and mdewein@ase.org Look forward to talking!
