Maine's Uniform Building Code Becomes Voluntary
Maine's Uniform Building and Energy Code ( MUBEC ) has lost it's uniformity due to recently enacted legislation. LD1416 makes it voluntary for any municipality under 4,000 population to adopt MUBEC or any code at all. Out of 520+ municipalities in Maine, approximately 90 are over 4,000! The legislature couldn't repeal the code because Maine would have to pay back $ 30,000,000 to the federal government, so they effectively neutered the code. Now we'll see how many town's will adopt the code.
