Revisioning the American Dream

Newport Partners, a small building and housing consulting firm located outside of Washington, DC, is kicking off a new research project, "Revisioning the American Dream." Consumer preferences are constantly changing. Most notably, we see preferences change due to the development of new technologies. But demographic, economic, and cultural shifts result in significant changes to consumer preference as well.
Companies are always looking to stay current on how new technologies, along with demographic, economic, and cultural trends affect consumer preference; and this information is used to modify existing products or to develop new ones in order to meet changing consumer demand.
As consultants in the homebuilding industry, we’re interested in how the consumer’s preference for housing has changed. For instance, how have consumer beliefs about their economic future and their attitude toward debt in light of the recent foreclosure crisis affected how much home consumers are willing to buy? With the increase of women in the workplace and an explosion of after school activities available to children, is the dining room space as important as it used to be? How has the increased cost of energy affected the desire for energy efficient features, the preferred size of the home, and their preference as to where they are located?
