Indiana Commission Approves Rule Adopting ASHRAE 90.1-2007

In late 2009, the Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission (within the state Department of Homeland Security) approved LSA Document #09-388, which would amend the Indiana Energy Conservation Code (repealing 675 IAC 19-3 and adding 675 IAC 19-4) by adopting ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007 for Class 1 structures (commercial buildings and residential buildings with three or more dwelling units). This would be the first substantial commercial code update in two decades.  Following the state’s new rule adoption process, the proposal was published in the Indiana Register on December 23 and given a public hearing on January 28. This rule was scheduled to be submitted to the Attorney General’s office, but due to clerical errors, the Commission must correct the errors at its March 2 meeting and resubmit the rule. An effective date is now expected in early May.
