Maine Energy Code Bills Go Before Legislative Committee May 6
On April 14, a House committee in the Maine Legislature voted that a bill (LD 43) that would repeal the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code (MUBEC) ought not to pass.
Two other bills addressing the MUBEC will be considered by the Committee on State and Local Government on May 6. LD 1416 would return the power of adopting building codes to municipalities, shrinking the statewide application of the MUBEC. LD 1442 would clarify enforcement of the MUBEC and reaffirm its position as the statewide construction code.
After the legislative establishment of the MUBEC in April 2008, the Bureau of Building Codes and Standards (within the Department of Public Safety) issued regulations setting the 2009 IECC and ASHRAE 90.1-2007 as the mandatory energy standards for residential, commercial, and public buildings statewide. The MUBEC became effective June 1, 2010. Read more about the new rules here.
