The Case for Efficient Construction in India

As India's building construction industry grows, the concern for building energy consumption has also emerged as a national and global issue. The buildings sector has now emerged as a focal point in the international discourse on efficiency as a climate mitigation tool. To improve building energy efficiency and moderate energy consumption, the Government of India introduced the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) as a voluntary effort in 2007. The codes are applicable to new buildings with the potential to reduce energy use on a long-term basis. But challenges still remain with policies and measures, which need to be ushered in to unlock the potential, in addition to tackling the existing stock of buildings with the codes.
