DOE Final Determination on ASHRAE 90.1-2010 Estimates 18.5% Energy Savings

On October 18, 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy issued a final determination in the Federal Register that buildings meeting ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010 will use an estimated 18.5% less energy than structures using the previous 2007 edition. As required by federal law under the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct), within two years of the publication of the final determination, states (including the District of Columbia) are required to file certification statements to DOE that they have reviewed the provisions of their commercial building code regarding energy efficiency and made a determination as to whether to update their code to meet or exceed the Standard 90.1-2010. Certification statements by the states are due October 18, 2013.

DOE also issued a preliminary determination on the 2012 IECC on October 19, 2011.
