Largest Zero Net Energy Community Opens at UC Davis

Davis, Calif. – The country’s largest “zero net energy” community — designed to generate as much energy as it consumes – officially opens Saturday on the campus of the University of California at Davis, some 80 miles northeast of San Francisco. While individual homes and commercial buildings that use zero net energy over the course of a year have been built in a handful of U.S. states (and nearly a dozen countries), the university says this is the largest planned community of its kind in the U.S.

While I don't know if I'm ready to make my home "zero net energy", I am willing to look into how I can get closer to that point. As I'd like to stay in my current home, I'm wondering what questions I should be asking San Francisco remodeling companies regarding energy efficiency? The university housing in the article is certainly aesthetically pleasing. Hopefully, there are a lot of options in terms of "appearance" as that is an important factor to us.

Hi lasso, one question you can definitely ask is whether your home meets the national model energy code. Even though California has Title 24, this checklist on the IECC should give a good overview of easy-to-see energy efficiency requirements: http://bcap-ocean.org/resource/energy-code-checklist
